Volunteering

Our dedicated volunteers are invaluable to Headway South Bucks. We rely heavily on all of them to work alongside our employed staff, in order to support our service users in a number of different ways.

Our volunteers are made up of a wide variety of people from those with minor head injuries themselves, to caring individuals who would like to spare some time to help others, to psychology students wanting to gain some experience before furthering their career.

Whoever you are and whatever time you have to spare, it will be hugely appreciated. Whether you are happy making a cup of tea for someone, having a friendly chat with service users, feel you can assist with cognitive therapy or can offer a few hours administrative support we would love to hear from you!

Volunteering FAQs

When do you need volunteers?

Our volunteers help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9.30am and 4pm. You don't need to do all these hours - just a few hours is a great help!

Do I need any experience?

No experience needed! We're looking for people who are friendly, committed, cheerful and flexible.

What will I be doing?

Supporting service users to participate in activities such as word/memory games, quizzes, crafts and games. Volunteers play a key role in encouraging service users to try a variety of new activities. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to attend and support service users on outings such as theatre trips. Outstanding tea making skills are always welcome!

"Just over 6 years ago, I heard from a friend that Headway South Bucks needed volunteers. Being retired, I made contact with the organisation and now support weekly.
The time I spend at Headway is very rewarding and worthwhile : we all have lots of fun and there is much laughter.

Clients, staff and volunteers are great company and we cover a variety of activities including games, quizzes, music, craft , cooking, chess and even some maths.
I attend once a week with my wife who has been a volunteer for over 3 years.

If you enjoy helping others and meeting people, Headway South Bucks is a wonderful environment to achieve this and more."

"Volunteering at Headway South Bucks in Bourne End is a great opportunity to support people who are living with brain injury. It involves supporting service users to participate in group activities including cooking, arts and crafts, music therapy, exercise groups and quizzes. We also spend time playing board games and word games with individual service users as they wish. There are also group outings which offer a social opportunity for service users in the community in which volunteers support individuals. After retirement, volunteering at Headway gave me the perfect way to use some of my free time to help provide and sustain a much-needed resource for the service users and their families and which is fun, varied, rewarding and a great way to make new friendships!"
